Be Careful Where You Cut

I'm a day behind with this but I want to point out a 'must-read' for anyone who is going through - or could potentially go through - cutbacks, downsizing, restructuring or whatever euphimism you care to use -

If your company declares, "We are cutting all salespeople's travel by 25 percent," or "Every department will cut staff by ten percent," lift your eyebrows superciliously, and say, "That's pretty stupid."

Making across the board cuts is like going to the bank and asking for five inches of money. A ten dollar bill and a one dollar bill take up the same amount of space, but their value is not equal. Your company does many things, and making across the board cuts ignores that each of these things has its own value.

I would have thought that to be self-evident, but apparently there are organizations that fail to understand what should be a simple concept - When it's time to trim the fat from your budget use extreme care to not cut into the meat of your success.

Yeah, I know, it's a bit corny. But you get the point....
