Given the choice, would you choose a new team member who doesn't possess all the knowledge and skills required for a position but is trainable, or an expert who is set in his or her ways?
The first option requires accepting some near-term inefficiency and turbulence while the new team member gets up to speed. The second would allow for what should be a seamless transition but it may result in issues down the road should new skills and methods be introduced. As a team leader it is up to you to make the judgement call as to which option will be better for your organization.
It has been my experience that choosing the trainable rookie is far better for the long-term success of the team in particular and the organization in general. Sacrificing a little comfort and efficiency up front leads to a more agile and adaptable team in the long run. But you're the team leader - what would you do? And why?
