Team Building: It's the Little Things

Pen and PaperIt's the little things that separate great leaders from good leaders. Here's a little thing that you can incorporate in your leadership toolbox that will pay great dividends in developing your team.

The next time one of your team members goes over and above, and after you publicly acknowledge their contribution (You do praise in public, don't you?) sit down at your desk and go over and above yourself. Pull out a sheet of your personal stationary and your best pen (You do have personal stationary and a high quality pen, don't you?) and use them to write a short personal note of thanks. Then place it in an envelope, hand address it to the employee's home address, put a stamp on it and drop it in the mail.

Imagine the recipient's surprise and delight at receiving such a personal note praising their contribution to the team and the joy of being able to immediately share it with their family.

Trust me - it works.
